The session clock
After-hours and pre-market moves are real prices on thin volume, so they exaggerate. Index futures, which trade nearly around the clock, are the better gauge of how the regular open may start. An earnings move after hours in one name often fades or flips by the open. Treat both as weather vanes, not verdicts. And a note on this site: the ticker at the top of this page is delayed data and does not track after hours.

Index futures (S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures) trade nearly around the clock on weekdays, which is why they keep moving while the cash market sits closed.
